The 2007 Wooden Boat Festival theme is Shipwrights & Sailors. The original watercolor, "Crusoe 1934" was created specifically for the festival art competition by dutch-born and trained graphic designer, Kees Prins. Prins is also a shipwright and sailor, having moved here with his family to work as an instructor at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in 2002. In the painting, he includes tools of the trade, the ship's lines and the boat under sail on Admiralty Inlet. "The impact of this piece for telling the story of our community, of boats and owners, of artists, sailors and shipwrights, would not be so complete were it not for the fact that the boat is owned and regularly sailed by local shipwright Arren Day, one of the owners of Freya Boatworks in Boat Haven Shipyard. This is exactly the kind of story we think is important to tell," said Cronkhite. "Boats like this. People like this. They live here. They work here. Our maritime culture is real, every day and all-year." Price: $12.00 |
